Pos Malaysia shares their sustainability journey to inspire others to follow suit
MALAYSIA’S national post and parcel service provider, Pos Malaysia, recently organised Beyond the Boardroom: ESG Strategies for Tomorrow’s Leaders – to share insights and their progress on their sustainability journey.
The event, hosted in collaboration with Accenture – a leading global professional services company and the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia and Brunei (UNGCMYB), drew various corporations and organisations in Malaysia.
Since early 2022, Pos Malaysia has been implementing its environmental, social and governance (ESG) roadmap.
Pos Malaysia’s group chief executive officer Charles Brewer, emphasised Pos Malaysia’s integral role in the nation's growth and how it is evolving through sustainable practices.
Countries like Malaysia, noted Brewer, is in its early stages of its sustainability journey and needs good role models.
“If other companies look at Pos Malaysia with all its challenges – from its transformation and size of business to its fiscal challenges and say if they can, we can, then it's a really positive thing,” he added.
With the assistance of Accenture, said Brewer, Pos Malaysia developed plans and strategies to set targets for reducing its environmental footprint and achieving net-zero carbon emissions for its operations by 2050.
Accenture’s South-East Asia (SEA) Energy Transition lead, Justin Goh, explained that the initiative focused on net zero, workforce skills and waste, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).
In March 2023, Pos Malaysia officially rolled out its Sustainability Roadmap, encompassing six initiatives focused on alternative delivery methods, fleet optimisation, green buildings, waste management, sustainable packaging and digital learning.
Zooming in on its extensive fleets that deliver to more than 11 million addresses across the country, Brewer noted that by the end of 2023, Pos Malaysia will have 200 two-wheel EVs on the road and 143 four-wheel EVs.
“Next year we will increase our two-wheel EV to 1,300 and four-wheel to 300,” he said, adding that Pos Malaysia is aiming for a 100% electric fleet by 2030.
At the event, Brewer also highlighted Pos Malaysia's advancements, including expanding solar-powered buildings from three to 17 next year.
Additionally, the company is enhancing driver safety and reducing emissions through telematics, while also implementing waste reduction measures such as recycling throughout the organisation and adopting packaging made from 80% recycled materials.
UNGCMYB’s programme director Shanta Helena Dwarkasing, who addressed the topic of sustainability leadership, also commended Pos Malaysia for their efforts.
“It’s great that Pos Malaysia has set a net zero target to achieve by 2050 because it shows how your business will be competitive in a low carbon economy,” she said.
The insightful event also included a panel discussion moderated by Goh, which saw Brewer, Dwarkasing and independent director of Batu Kawan Berhad, Dr Tunku Alina Alias, exchanging perspectives on pressing challenges, discoveries and transformative sustainability stories.
