The best time for a Volvo electric model is now

C40 Recharge Pure Electric.

IN March 2022, Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) embarked on its electrification journey with the launch of the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric, the company’s first pure electric vehicle (EV) presently priced at RM278,888 on-the-road without insurance.

The launch of XC40 Recharge Pure Electric was a milestone for VCM as it became the first luxury car brand in the country to locally assemble EVs in the Volvo plant in Shah Alam.

This was followed by the December 2022 launch of the C40 Recharge Pure Electric priced at RM288,888 on the road without insurance.

VCM aims to bring greater awareness of the current climate challenges to Malaysians and become a leader in sustainability in the automotive industry through its product offerings, business operations, and local initiatives.

This is in line with the Volvo Car Group’s global ambitions – to be a fully electric car company by 2030 - and become a climate-neutral company by 2040.

By 2030, the Swedish luxury car marque intends to only sell fully electric cars and phase out any car in its global portfolio with an internal combustion engine (ICE), including hybrids.

BEVs (battery electric vehicles) such as the XC40 and C40 deliver a more powerful performance as well as smoother and quieter ride, compared with traditional ICE cars.

XC40 Recharge Pure Electric

Based on the XC40 compact premium SUV (sport utility vehicle), the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric has a fully electric all-wheel-drive powertrain which outputs 408hp (300kW) and 660Nm of torque.

The electric XC40 can sprint from 0-100kph in 4.9 seconds and towards a top speed of 180kph.

Designed with a 400V system, the electric XC40 promises a driving range of 438km (according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure or (WLTP) from its 78kWh lithium-ion battery.

The battery can be charged up from 0 to 100% using 11kW AC in around eight hours under ideal conditions, while a 150kW DC will power up from 10% to 80% in 28 minutes.

Tyres are the 19-inch Pirelli P Zero Elect specially made for EVs.

Inside, the electric XC40 features a digital instrument panel with an Android-powered infotainment system and a 9-inch touchscreen.

Users can access Google Maps, Google Assistant and Google Play.

There’s also Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth connectivity and wireless phone charging.

Safety features include the upgraded Advanced Driver Assistance System, active cruise control and pilot assist, City Safety, blind spot information system, lane keeping aid and cross-traffic alert among others.

The XC40’s intelligent safety assistance technology can help to detect and avoid other vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists with steering support and braking.

The electric XC40 also comes with a Harman Kardon sound system, rear air conditioner vents and a hands-free rear power tailgate.

VCM’s “hassle-free price” includes a charging cable, a standard warranty of five years with unlimited mileage, a battery warranty of eight years with a mileage cap of 160,000km, and five years service package and roadside assistance.

C40 Recharge Pure Electric

The C40 Recharge Pure Electric is Volvo’s first pure electric crossover with a leather-free interior and Google built-in.

A sleeker, sportier step-up from the XC40 Pure Recharge, it boasts the same 78kWh lithium-ion battery, of which 75kW is usable, which powers up a dual-motor setup that provides 408hp and 660Nm of torque.

The C40 rolls on 19-inch alloy wheels, and the 0 to 100kph sprint takes a brisk 4.7 seconds before reaching a top speed of 180kph, making it the quickest Volvo EV available in Malaysia.

The C40 is able to provide up to 450km of range with a full charge (according to WLTP), and) and consumes just 19.8kW per 100km.

The improved acceleration and range compared to its debut pure electric sibling are due to the C40 Recharge Pure Electric’s more aerodynamic design.

Charging up the battery from 0% to 100% at home via an AC 7.4kW/32Amp single-phase wall box will take 11 hours to complete while an AC 11kW/16Amp triple-phase wall box will take about eight hours instead.

Of course, charging times will vary and are dependent on factors such as outdoor temperature, current battery temperature, charging equipment, battery condition and car condition.

Utilising a 50kW DC rapid charging station will get the battery from 10% to 80% in 68 minutes while a 150kW DC rapid charger will take only 28 minutes.

It has an Android-powered infotainment system with a 9.0-inch portrait integrated colour touchscreen, and 600W Harman Kardon Premium Sound Audio System with 13 hi-fi speakers including an air-ventilated subwoofer.

Also, there are seven airbags, run-off road protection and a

whiplash protection system (WHIPS) for those seated up front.

The more advanced Preventive Safety features include front and rear collision warning and mitigation support, lane keeping aid, run-off road mitigation, blind spot information system with steer assist and cross-traffic alert with auto brake.

The C40 is covered by a five-year vehicle warranty, eight-year or 160,000km (whichever comes first) battery warranty.

It is also accompanied by a five-year Volvo on Call (roadside Assistance), five-year or 100,000km (whichever comes first) Volvo Service included, a four-year Digital Service and a charging cable.
