Meet Prof Lee Chew Ging, head of Southampton Malaysia Business School (SMBS).

TO spearhead the growth and expansion of its business school, University of Southampton Malaysia (UoSM) recently appointed Prof Lee Chew Ging as Southampton Malaysia Business School (SMBS) head.

His highly distinguished academic career includes being Nottingham University Business School Malaysia dean, University of Nottingham Teaching and Learning assistant director, INTI International University and Colleges deputy chief academic officer and Wawasan Open University associate vice chancellor.

“I am delighted to be joining SMBS at the University of Southampton Malaysia. It is an honour to be appointed as the school head at a world-leading institution within the top 100 universities globally,” says Prof Lee.

“I very much look forward to collaborating with colleagues and students within SMBS and across Southampton, as well as policy-makers, business leaders and industry partners around the region to take the school to greater heights.”

Prof Lee also serves as a member on the Board of Examiners, Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers. He was also entrusted with the responsibility of developing the Programme Standards: Business Studies for the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).

As he begins his new role, Prof Lee is confident of leading the school forward and building a team of world-class academics, as they have a crucial role to play in building a brighter future for generations to come.

He strongly believes that the current business programmes offered by the university are relevant to the industry’s demands.

“SMBS has a portfolio of nine undergraduate programmes and three postgraduate programmes that cover accounting, actuarial science, business analytics, economics, entrepreneurship, finance, financial technology, management and marketing. Students can select from a number of modules to tailor their programme towards their future employability,” he says.

SMBS has a Bloomberg trading laboratory equipped with 12 terminals. Students are encouraged to achieve Bloomberg Market Concepts certification and gain access to different databases, such as Fitch Connect and Datastream.

To focus on students’ wellbeing outside the classroom, UoSM introduced student-centred spaces such as a music room, a recreational room, a student association room as well as other creative open spaces to enhance the quality and learning experience throughout the students’ journey with the university.

The low student-staff ratio at UoSM adds additional value to the student experience and support structure. The staff are on hand to support their academic and career success. As a result, UoSM students have consistently achieved outstanding success in their degrees, and year-on-year have secured employment across a range of global companies following graduation.
