KUALA LUMPUR: Football fans in Malaysia received some exciting news when Astro announced that it will be extending the deal with the English Premier League (EPL) to continue showing all the matches live for three more seasons until 2025.
Astro Group COO and CEO of TV, Euan Smith, made the announcement in a special live match viewing event between Arsenal and Manchester United at Auto Bavaria Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.
“It is a three-year renewal whereby Astro will continue to provide exclusive coverage of all 380 matches live. All the matches will be in HD while 20% of the matches will be in 4K UHD.
“Our customers can also look out for our exclusive live match screening events, signed jersey giveaways, and other treats on Astro Rewards.
“There will also be exclusive interviews with Premier League stars, commentary by pundits, pre-match and post-match coverage and analysis, competitions for fans with attractive prizes,” said Smith.
Adam Carruthers who usually hosts the pre-match and post-match analysis was also the host for the event on Saturday along with Reem Shahwa.
During the event, Adam and Reem staged a question and answer sessions with fans and gave out club shirts to those who answered correctly.
A lucky draw was also conducted and one of the fans took home an Astro Rewards’ signed jersey by Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford worth RM4,000.
National athletes such as footballer Brendan Gan, badminton star Goh Liu Ying and former gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi also made appearances.

On the challenges faced by Astro in an evolving landscape, Smith said: “One of our biggest challenges is piracy. For a long time, people are streaming football illegally and watching unauthorized streams. This is hurting the content industry, and we need to have better enforcement to stop those who distribute content illegally on streaming sites and social media.”
Smith said that those who watch football illegally are actually missing out a lot as they can’t enjoy the other benefits provided by Astro such as pre-match, post-match coverage, games in HD and in 4K, along with Interactive Mode on Astro GO.
