No. 2 seed Elise Mertens of Belgium brushed off a loss in a first-set tiebreaker and got past Germany's Tatjana Maria 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-1 on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Singapore Tennis Open.
Mertens rallied from a 3-0 hole in the first set to get to the tiebreaker, only to squander a 3-0 head start by losing seven straight points. She cleaned up her game in the second and third sets and won 11 of her 13 first-service points in the dominant third frame.
