Aira battles hard but bows out in quarter-finals

No way through: The defeat was a repeat of Aira's Asian Games debut, when also fell to Sin Yuk in the quarter-finals at the previous edition in Hangzhou.

PETALING JAYA: National squash player Aira Azman's campaign ended in the quarter-finals at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games after she fell to Hong Kong’s Chan Sin Yuk on Friday (Sept 25).

World No. 24 Aira had started strong by taking the first set, but world No. 21 Sin Yuk fought back to win 10-12, 11-9, 11-5, 11-9 in 32 minutes at the Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena.

It was a repeat of Aira's Asian Games debut, where she also fell to Sin Yuk in the quarter-finals in Hangzhou.

Aira admitted that she had given everything on court, but her opponent played better.

“I am sorry for the result,” said Aira.

“For me, she (Sin Yuk) played really well. We have met on the Tour multiple times and we know each other well.

“I’m happy with how I pushed myself but of course, disappointed with the result.”

Aira will shift her focus to the women’s team event next, where the squad will aim to defend their gold medal.
