PETALING JAYA: Junior squash player Anusha Raymond (pic) is aiming for a new milestone after concluding her season on a high note.
The 16-year-old Anusha has set her sights on making her maiden appearance in the Malaysian Games (Sukma) which will be held in Sarawak in August next year.
Anusha demonstrated her prowess by defeating T. Venushana 11-6, 11-4, 11-4 in the final to lift the girls’ Under-17 title at the Selangor State Closed championships last week.
Thrilled with her success in the state tourney, Anusha is hoping to maintain her fine form and secure a spot to represent Selangor in Sukma.
“Winning the Under-17 title was a sweet ending for me this year. I’ve now set my targets for 2024 and one of the goals is to play in Sukma,” said Anusha.
“To do so, I will have to juggle my time between studies and squash to stay on top of my game.”
Meanwhile, Erwin Kros Christopher captured the boys’ Under-17 title after securing a 11-6, 11-5, 12-10 win over M. Nittish in the final.
Erwin showed his potential as a rising star by not dropping a single set throughout the tournament en route to winning the title.
He was pleased with his victory, but believes that there is much room for improvement.
“I was recently upgraded to Under-17 and had to face a few senior and older players, but played confidently to win it,” said the 15-year-old Erwin.
“Coach (Ifrahim) Gul has helped to equip me with lots of drills and I have also put in a lot of hard work in this tournament.”
