Yee Xian strengthens national team bid with Singapore title

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian squash player Siow Yee Xian hopes his consistent performance will earn him a spot in the national team after he clinched his third title this year at the UTU Singapore Challenger 6K on Monday (July 6).

The 25-year-old Yee Xian lived up to his top billing by defeating compatriot Low Wa Sern 11-7, 11-5, 11-6 at the Kallang Squash Centre.

Since returning from his collegiate stint at Yale University earlier this year, the world No. 104 Yee Xian had won the Rochester Pro Am Open in New York in April and the President’s Trophy in Seremban last month.

He hopes his consistent performance will earn the trust of Malaysia’s national coaches.

"Since I returned from the United States, I have rejoined the national team training sessions," said Yee Xian.

"My plan is to train hard and earn the trust of the coaches."

"I'm happy with how I'm performing right now. I have been consistent and I'm looking forward to bringing this confidence into my next event," said Yee Xian, who will compete in the PN Fleet Club Squash Open in Karachi next.

In an all-Malaysian final in the women’s category, U. Thanusaa won the title after compatriot K. Sehveetrraa withdrew three sets into the match.

Thanusaa was leading 2-1 when Sehveetrraa, who had entered the match with an ankle injury, pulled out while trailing 11-8, 8-11, 4-11.

Thanusaa had earlier downed top seed Harleein Tan 9-11, 11-4, 7-11, 11-6, 11-7 in the semi-finals.
