Wa-Sern eyes second title in national junior meet

PETALING JAYA: Low Wa-Sern is pumped up to claim his second title in the National Junior Championships.

He secured another easy 11-1, 11-3, 11-3 win against Terengganu’s Addin Iqwan in the fourth round of the boys' Under-17 category yesterday to secure his spot in the quarter-finals, where he will meet Federal Territories’ K. Hashvind at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil today.

Wa-Sern had earlier defeated Perak’s A. Sreetheeban 11-3, 11-3, 11-2 in the second round and Sarawak’s B. Lohan Arulkanden 11-1, 11-2, 11-5 in the third.

At the last year's edition, Wa-Sern finished runner-up after going down to Harith Daniel Jefri.

"I’ve won once in 2021 and now, I’m aiming to win my second national junior title," said Wa-Sern, who pocketed the Under-15 title then.

Wa-Sern is confident of reaching the semis as he had defeated Hashvind in the Professional Squash Association (PSA) WSF Satellite at the Royal Sungei Ujong Club, in Seremban this month.

Hashvind overcame Wong Lee Hong 7-11, 11-6, 11-3, 11-9 in another fourth round match.

"In the last match against him (Hashvind), I dropped a set before securing a 3-1 win."

"It'll be tough but I'm confident because I’ve been playing well recently and I’m well-prepared for this match," said Wa-Sern, who claimed his first PSA title at the Red One PSA WSF Satellite last Sunday.
