PETALING JAYA: National shooter Mohd Lutfi Othman was gunning for three golds in the President Ally T. H. Ong Trophy meet but his dream was dashed due to measures taken to curb Covid-19.
Lutfi had won the men’s individual and team rifle 50m three-position at the National Subang Shooting Range last week and was at the brink of winning the third in the rifle 50m prone but the tournament was cut short after the National Shooting Association of Malaysia (NSAM) decided to scrap it - following the advisory from the Sports Commissioner to either postpone or cancel tournaments.
“I could have added to my gold medal tally in the domestic tournament but it did not happen. I’ve won 11 golds in 13 domestic tournaments so far and I intend to remain consistent, ” said the 25-year-old shooter.
Although he is confined in the house due to the government’s movement control order (MCO), Lutfi has come out with plans to stay in touch with the sport.
“I’m focusing on physical activities at home as it has always been part of my routine besides shooting at the National Sports Council (NSC) shooting range, ” he said.
“I need to be in good shape physically, so that my shooting will be good too. So, I am not worried about a dip in performance for future tournaments.
“I want to be known as the shooter who consistently guns down records in the 50m rifle three positions. I have been doing it since 2017.”
Lutfi said he was looking forward to training with young shooters, who are expected to join the national team in June.
Earlier this month, NSAM promoted Haritz Iklil Hessly Hafiz, Nurul Syasya Nadiah Ariffin, Alia Husna Budruddin and Nur Izazi Rosli and dropped seniors Joseline Cheah, Mohd Ezuan Nasir Khan and Shahera Rahim Raja.
“It’s a good move as we need the young shooters to gain experience as quickly as possible to be at the highest level.
“I’ve seen young shooters showing improvements in the 10m air rifle, and because of that, I am not taking part in this event because I am confident that we have found capable replacements.”
