Consistency key for Chen Jie in Asian Games pursuit

PETALING JAYA: Despite being a SEA Games record breaker, national rifle shooter Gan Chen Jie (pic) constantly reminds herself that reputation alone counts for little in shooting – consistency is what truly makes the difference.

Based on current form, the 21-year-old is in strong contention for a place at the upcoming Asian Games in Japan. However, Chen Jie insists she is far from a guaranteed selection and must continue delivering results on the international stage to secure her spot.

Currently, the national women’s rifle squad comprise Chen Jie, Alia Husna Budruddin and Nur Suryani Taibi.

“My main focus before the Asian Games is the World Cups in Spain from April 3-12 and Germany from May 24-31. These competitions are part of the Asian Games selection process,” she said.

To prepare for the assignments, Chen Jie – a Human Resource Management student at Help University – and her coach Park Cheol-wan have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to sharpen her technique and refine her aim.

“I started this season by strengthening my fundamentals and improving consistency. After reviewing past competitions, my coach and I worked extensively on technical stability and mental control, especially during high-pressure moments. So far, the season has been progressive,” she added.

Chen Jie enjoyed a dream debut at the SEA Games, where she etched her name in the record books en route to winning gold in the women’s 50m rifle three positions event.

The Negri Sembilan shooter triumphed in style, setting a new SEA Games record with a winning score of 451.7 points – her third record of the Games.

Indonesia’s Audrey Zahra Dhiyaanisa took silver with 451.5 points, while Singapore’s Adele Tan claimed bronze with 440.6. The previous record of 451.1 was held by Vietnam’s Phi Thanh Thu since the 2021 Hanoi edition.

Chen Jie also bagged a team silver in the 50m rifle three positions alongside Alia and Suryani, and a bronze medal in the 10m air rifle event.

Remarkably, she shattered two SEA Games records in a single day – in both the individual and team events of the 50m rifle three positions. Chen Jie, Alia and Suryani combined for 1,717 points in the qualifiers, eclipsing the previous mark of 1,700 set at the 2024 Tun Hanif Trophy.

“Competing at the SEA Games taught me that success is not only about technical skill – it is also about mental discipline, emotional control and consistency,” said Chen Jie.

“I realised that small details make a big difference. Breathing rhythm, focus, confidence and staying calm under pressure can determine the final result.”

Looking ahead to 2026, Chen Jie is determined to excel both on the range and in her academic pursuits.

“I aim to improve my world ranking, prepare well for Asian Games selection and work towards future Olympic qualification.

“Beyond shooting, I want to balance my studies and continue improving myself as a person.

“For me, being an athlete is not just about training and competing. Education and discipline are equally important.”
