Big guns collide early in FA Cup

PETALING JAYA: It is just the round of 16, but the FA Cup already have some mouth-watering clashes to watch.

The first is last season’s runners-up Sabah taking on five-time champions Selangor in a two-legged affair, with the first leg set for Sept 1 or 2.

The other top clash will be three-time champions Kuala Lumpur taking on two-time winners Perak.

Terengganu will take on Brunei in the other match to watch in the competition.

Defending champions and five-time winners Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) will take on A1 Semi-Pro side Universiti Malaya (UM)-Damansara United.

Former Selangor and JDT midfielder Safiq Rahim is looking forward to a strong FA Cup where all the sides can fight for their lives to win the title.

“The FA Cup, it is a different campaign compared to the Super League. Everyone will give more than 100% in cup competitions because of the format.

“That is the speciality of these cup competitions,” said the 39-year-old, who won four FA Cup titles with JDT in 2016, 2022, 2023 and 2024.

Last year’s final saw JDT thrashing Sabah 5-0 at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Dec 14.
