PETALING JAYA: The leap from the Super League to international football has been an eye-opener for Rodney Celvin Akwensivie.
The 29-year-old Kuching City defender admitted the intensity of his first Harimau Malaya camp caught him off guard, but he now believes he has what it takes to compete for the national team ahead of Malaysia’s crucial AFF Hyundai Cup Group B clash against the Philippines at the Cheras Football Stadium on Saturday.
“The level here is completely different in terms of intensity and the way everything is done. It surprised me, but in a good way. It also made me realise that I can compete at this level,” said Rodney.
“That said, I’m not fully satisfied yet. This is my first national camp and there’s still plenty for me to improve.
“My teammates have helped me a lot, making my job easier, and we’ve developed a good understanding.”
Malaysia began their campaign with victories over Myanmar (2-1) and Laos (4-0) before suffering a 2-0 defeat to Thailand last Saturday, leaving them needing a win over the Philippines to stay on course for the semi-finals.
Rodney believes the team must show greater urgency in the attacking third.
“We need to be more aggressive going forward and sharper in front of goal. Keeping possession isn’t our problem, but once we get into the final third, we need to move the ball quicker and attack with more urgency,” he said.
The Sabah-born defender also praised his growing partnership with fellow centreback Ubaidullah Samsul Fazili.
“I enjoy playing with Ubai. He’s a talented young player who keeps improving. We understand each other’s game and our chemistry is getting better.”
The top two teams in Group B will advance to the semi-finals.
