PETALING JAYA: Interim national football coach Tan Cheng Hoe hailed Malaysia’s fighting comeback win in the Hyundai AFF Cup but admitted concerns remain over his players’ fitness.
Harimau Malaya came from behind to beat Myanmar 2-1 in their Group B opener at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon on Saturday.
“The result gives me confidence, but we know we still have weaknesses. At times, we are not yet playing with the strong character we need,” said Cheng Hoe.
“We are slowly building that up. Fitness-wise, we are a bit worried as most of the players have only just returned from pre-season training.
“I hope in another one or two matches we’ll be ready in terms of teamwork, understanding and chemistry. That’s very important.
Cheng Hoe handed first caps to centreback Rodney Celvin Akwensivie, winger G. Pavithran and full-back Alif Ahmad in the starting eleven, but Malaysia struggled to find their rhythm in the opening 45 minutes.
Myanmar took the lead in the 10th minute when winger Win Naing Thun capitalised on a quick counter-attack, forcing a save from Rodney. Myat Khaung Kang pounced on the rebound to put the hosts ahead.
“Myanmar always play very strong physically, and they were highly motivated and committed to every moment on the field,” said Cheng Hoe.
“We put ourselves in trouble, and they came back very strong. It wasn’t an easy game as we knew Myanmar would come out firing.”
But the Malaysians turned the game around after the interval.
Captain and striker Paulo Josue struck twice in the space of five minutes – in the 52nd and 57th minutes – to complete the comeback.
Midfielder Wan Kuzain Wan Ahmad Kamal and playmaker Daryl Sham George were introduced in the 73rd minute, earning their own national debuts and adding fresh legs as Myanmar piled on the pressure. Malaysia will next take on Laos at the Cheras Football Stadium tomorrow and Cheng Hoe will hope Josue can inspire them to another win.
“I’m very happy that Paulo, as captain, has led the team with a good mixture of youth and experience.
“That’s really helped create a good working environment and harmony in the squad, and it gives us confidence that we can go far.”
