KUALA LUMPUR: A wounded animal fights hardest when cornered and national striker Syafiq Ahmad is not about to let his teammates forget it.
Malaysia head into their second Group B match of the AFF Hyundai Cup against Laos at the Cheras Football Stadium here today as firm favourites, especially after Laos were thrashed 0-5 by Thailand in their tournament opener.
Malaysia opened their campaign with a 2-1 win over Myanmar at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon on Saturday.
The 31-year-old forward believes that very defeat could make Laos more dangerous, not less.
Syafiq, who is expected to spearhead Harimau Malaya’s attack alongside captain Paulo Josue, said Laos’ young squad would likely come out firing on all cylinders in search of redemption.
“Laos have a young squad that work hard. They may play at a fast tempo because their young players will want to go all-out after failing to get a good result in their first game.
“They will give everything they have and we cannot take it lightly or be complacent.”
Syafiq, making his return to the national fold after a lengthy absence, credited senior figures like Paulo Josue and Mohamadou Sumareh for setting the tone.
“We saw how an experienced player like Paulo delivered to score a goal, and how Sumareh showed good touches.
“For the younger players, the seniors can show something they can follow,” he added.
Meanwhile, head coach Tan Cheng Hoe said: “I have observed and analysed their game – Laos have a quite young team, and we have to respect them.”
They are largely an Under-23 side under a new coach, and thrive on quick counter-attacks. We must avoid unnecessary turnovers in their own half and be clinical in front of goal.
Cheng Hoe gave an encouraging update on rightback Jimmy Raymond, who picked up an ankle injury during training.
“Jimmy’s condition is getting better... he should be ready for the match, but it depends on our medical staff’s assessment,” he said, adding that Malaysia have capable cover regardless.
