PETALING JAYA: Winger A. Selvan believes the time has come for a new challenge after making 152 appearances over nine years across youth and senior levels with Negri Sembilan.
The 25-year-old winger is determined to make his last dance’ with his club one to remember when they take on Kelantan in the Super League at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi today.
On Thursday, Negri confirmed that Selvan, often compared to former national winger S. Kunanlan for his blistering pace and direct style, will leave the club at the end of the season.
Although his next destination has yet to be officially announced, it is understood that several Klang Valley clubs are keen, with Selangor believed to be among the frontrunners.
For now, Selvan’s full attention is on Negri’s final home match.
“I have been with Negri since 2016, since I was 15 years old, and to realise I have spent so long here feels magical,” said Selvan.
“I have experienced so much with this club, so this final game in front of our supporters is definitely going to be emotional.
“I will give everything I have. I want to take on every opponent, work as hard as possible and help my home state finish the season with three points. That would be the perfect farewell for me.”
Quiet and reserved off the pitch, Selvan has earned a reputation as one of Negri’s most dependable players through his versatility, close control and attacking flair.
When asked why he decided to move on, Selvan said it was time for a new challenge to elevate his game further.
“It was time for a new challenge where I can learn from new coaches and players. Testing myself in a different environment could help boost my career, but most importantly, I want to learn and be better.
“When I spoke to the Negri management, they understood my decision and when I spoke to my parents, they just told me to do what is best for my career.”
A victory over Kelantan could help Negri secure seventh place in the Super League standings, a significant improvement from last season’s 12th-place finish.
The Deer currently sit on 26 points from 23 matches, while Kelantan are 12th with 15 points from the same number of games.
Kelantan, meanwhile, continue to grapple with financial uncertainty, with players and coaching staff reportedly owed three months’ salaries.
Several players have already announced their departures, including Bulgarian goalkeeper Damyan Damyanov and winger T. Saravanan via social media.
Despite the turmoil, Canadian midfielder Albert Kang has chosen to remain with the club until the end of the season.
“We are definitely facing a lot of challenges right now, especially with the squad being very thin, but the players who are still here are continuing to work hard,” said the 24-year-old.
“Personally, every time I step onto the pitch, I feel I have to give my best regardless of the circumstances.
‘‘It is still a privilege to play football professionally and I never take that for granted.
“It has been a difficult situation for everyone, but we just try to stay positive and focused on the game.”
