PETALING JAYA: For Ubaidullah Shamsul Fazili (pic), the 2025-2026 season has been as much about learning from mistakes as it has been about showcasing his growing versatility.
The Terengganu defender has endured a demanding campaign, but one that he believes is shaping him into a more complete footballer.
Frequently deployed across the backline, from centreback to fullback, and even in midfield, Ubaidullah has embraced the challenge of adapting to different roles.
“This season has been very challenging, providing many lessons and new experiences, especially with the national team and Terengganu,” he said.
“Playing in different positions in every game has been positive for me because it forced me to learn and adapt.”
His adaptability is not new. He demonstrated similar flexibility with Malaysia’s Under-23 side at the SEA Games last year, helping the team secure a bronze medal.
Since making his senior debut against Cape Verde on May 29, 2025, under national coach Peter Cklamovski, he has earned five caps.
At club level, Ubaidullah has featured in 22 matches across all competitions for the Turtles this season, while also making seven appearances for the national Under-23 squad.
Despite the progress, the defender insists there is still plenty of room for improvement.
“I feel there is still much to learn, particularly from a physical and mental standpoint,” he said.
“As players, we cannot afford to be complacent.
“With consistent playing time, every mistake I make helps me mature and become better.”
Terengganu currently sit fifth in the league, a position he believes can still improve.
“It has been a season full of trials, but there is still opportunity for us to climb higher. We must remain united, and the results will come,” he added.
Regular minutes have boosted his confidence, both on and off the pitch, while reinforcing his belief in growth through adversity.
“Mistakes are bound to happen, but that is how we learn and improve,” he said.
Ubaidullah has previously attracted interest from clubs in Thailand but opted to remain with Terengganu.
Cklamovski has also suggested the defender has the potential to play in Japan, home to one of Asia’s top leagues.
For now, however, his focus remains unchanged.
“My future is with Terengganu as I am still under contract. Like any player, I aspire to compete at the highest level, and if that opportunity comes, I will be ready.”
