PETALING JAYA: While the likes of Bergson da Silva and Arif Aiman Hanapi often grab the headlines for Johor Darul Ta’zim, one player has quietly gone about his business with remarkable consistency.

Spanish wingback Oscar Arribas has emerged as one of the club’s standout performers this season, thanks to his tenacity on both flanks and his ability to contribute effectively in attack while diligently carrying out defensive duties.

The 27-year-old, who joined JDT in 2023 from Spanish club Cartagena, has had to contend with uncertainty over the past two seasons following the arrivals of players such as Jonathan Silva, Raul Parra this season, and Murillo Henrique last year.

However, Arribas has responded in emphatic fashion, cementing his place in the starting XI through sheer work rate and consistency.

He can be regarded as one of the most improved players in the squad this season, having featured in 36 matches across all competitions, scoring 13 goals and providing 19 assists.

While his attacking returns are impressive, it is Arribas’ off-the-ball movement and defensive discipline that have drawn widespread praise.

His all-round performances have even placed him in contention as the best rightback in the domestic scene this season.

Arribas has been instrumental in JDT’s success, helping the Southern Tigers secure the Charity Shield, FA Cup and Super League titles this campaign. The club have now extended their remarkable run of consecutive Super League triumphs, a streak that began in 2014.

With more silverware still up for grabs, Arribas is expected to play a key role as JDT continue their push in the Malaysia Cup, Shopee Asean Club Championship and the AFC Champions League Elite.

He said the 3-0 win over Brunei on Sunday which sealed JDT’s 12th straight Super League title was a tougher match than the scoreline suggested.

“It was a tough game against Brunei but and we had to work and get the win. We’ve trained every day for this moment. We are champions and we deserve it,” said Arribas.

“This is for everyone. It has been a long year — we have played about 40 matches and there will be more to come.’’

‘’JDT are a club that won’t rest easy, so the commitment and intensity needed always make us better.”

Meanwhile, JDT captain Afiq Fazail expressed his gratitude after another successful campaign.

“I am grateful to God. It is very satisfying for us. We will continue pushing for the 13th title and beyond,” he said.
