Brazilian Bergson links up with Jairo, Yago for JDT’s all-Da Silva attack

PETALING JAYA: Striker Bergson da Silva of Brazil may not be a regular starter for Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) this season but he remains a threat for the rivals whenever he shows up in the domestic game.

The 34-year-old has started only six league matches and made a further six appearances off the bench, yet he is the Super League’s leading scorer with 13 goals.

And Bergson has no intention of slowing down.

“It’s never enough for me,” said Bergson, who has been with JDT since 2021.

Bergson, who is in line for naturalisation in March, is expected to be at his sharpest when the Southern Tigers face Negri Sembilan at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi today.

And expect him to be even more dangerous when he links up consistently with fellow Brazilian forwards Jairo da Silva and Yago da Silva, giving JDT a formidable all-Da Silva attacking combination.

Last year, Bergson finished as the third-highest scoring Brazilian worldwide, netting 32 goals in 37 matches.

“Every time I step on the pitch, I push myself to do my best. That’s my mentality and my target,” he said.

“There isn’t just one secret. The key is always to work harder. When I score, I need to be even better prepared for the next game and the next week.”

JDT are currently top of the Super League table with a perfect record, 39 points from 13 matches, making them the only team to have won all their league games this season.

They have extended the longest winning streak in league history to 30 consecutive matches, a run that began in August 2024, while their unbeaten streak across all competitions stretches back to April 2021, spanning an astonishing 97 games.

According to Bergson, it all comes down to mentality.

“Every competition is different and comes with different targets,” he said.

“When we play in the Super League, Malaysia Cup, Asean Club Championship Shopee Cup and the AFC Champions League Elite, expectations are always very high.

“Our target is always the same, to win every competition and bring trophies back to the club.”
