Kamil – Filipino with a Malaysian name who can put Panthers in the pink

PETALING JAYA: Kamil Jaser Amirul (pic) has emerged as one of the players to watch this season following a string of assured defensive performances for Penang in the Super League since January.

His name may sound Malaysian but the Filipino joined Penang from Dynamic Herb Cebu and has quickly established himself as their first-choice for the position.

The 22-year-old, who has featured in six matches across all competitions so far, has vowed to build further ground.

“I’m loving my stay in Penang. The city, the people, the food, the team have been very welcoming, making the transition so much easier,” he said.

So far, Kamil said he has enjoyed the game against Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) last week, where they lost 0-4 at their den.

“The game against JDT was exciting for me. In fact, my parents decided to fly in to watch the match.”

Kamil admitted that he was often mistaken for a Malaysian because of his name but he did have blood ties through his grandmother.

“When I can, I’ll try to connect with our relatives in Malaysia that my grandmother has been telling me about,” he said.

“They are originally from Sabah but are in Johor right now.

“I do feel right at home. I’ve actually met more Amiruls here than back home in the Philippines.”

Kamil is not the only Filipino in the Panthers squad. He is joined by playmaker Jose Elmer Porteria, better known as OJ Porteria.

Off the pitch, Kamil is also experiencing his first Ramadan in Malaysia.

“Ramadan reminds me that growth comes through sacrifice. This month teaches you discipline and patience.

“Even when you feel tired, you keep pushing. On the pitch, it’s the same. Nothing comes easy. If you want to win, you have to give everything.”
