Gamel urges Selangor to win immaterial game in Champs League to keep fans’ trust

PETALING JAYA: Selangor may be out of the running for the AFC Champions League Two round of 16, but interim coach Christophe Gamel and midfielder Zach Clough insist the team still have plenty to play for – to keep the trust and belief of their fans.

The Red Giants, who have lost their last four group matches, will take on Bangkok United at the BG Stadium in Pathum Thani today.

With qualification no longer possible, Gamel said the focus has shifted toward restoring pride and showing supporters that they are committed to rebuilding.

“We have a couple of injuries coming into this match and I have to deal with that, but I’m happy with the group that is here. I trust the players and the performance we can produce next,” said Gamel.

“We know we will be facing a very strong opponent, but we have nothing to lose. The most important thing now is to keep the momentum going after our win at home in the league.”

Gamel, who took over on an interim basis during a turbulent period, acknowledged the concerns raised by segments of the fanbase following recent results.

However, he believes rebuilding takes time and insists the players are fully committed.

“Some fans may feel disappointed, but that’s part of football,” he said. “Nothing is built in one day. We’re not playing the same football as before, and when you change things, you need time.

“Our foundation isn’t fully settled yet, but with each win or good performance, fans can see the effort the players are giving. If you give everything, even without getting the result, fans understand. We respect them, and they must also respect the club.”

Despite an important fixture looming this Sunday, where they will take on Sabah in the FA Cup semi-final second leg, Gamel confirmed he will field a competitive squad against Bangkok, though he also intends to use the match to evaluate more players.

“It’s a chance for me to see other players in a big game and assess what they can bring,” he said.

“But we must respect our opponents, so we’ll field a strong team. It’s important to trust every player.”

Clough, one of Selangor’s key midfielders, echoed Gamel’s sentiments and stressed that the players are determined to repay supporters despite the team’s struggles.

“The fans were great last weekend when we won. They travel all over Southeast Asia to support us,” he said.

“We don’t want to lose, representing Selangor means fighting for the badge. We have to repay the fans who spend money to come watch us. We’ll keep fighting and working together. Hopefully we can build momentum for the rest of the season.”
