Tierney’s duel with friend Haziq provides the thrust in Rhinos-Panthers clash

PETALING JAYA: Sabah’s Fergus Tierney is hoping the team can pull off a win when they take on Penang today, but he’s also eager to go toe-to-toe with Ahmad Haziq Kutty Abba.

Friends off the pitch, Tierney and Haziq will meet at the Likas Stadium today as Sabah continue to search for their first win this Super League season.

The 22-year-old Tierney said the team had been feeling good ahead of the match, and he knows it won’t be easy, especially with quality players like Haziq in the team.

“One of the players I’m looking forward to playing against is Haziq. He’s a good friend of mine,” said Tierney.

“I can’t wait to play against him. I know his quality and what he brings to the field.”

Eight matches in so far this season, Sabah are only a spot above bottom in 12th place with four points, coming from four draws and four losses.

But Tierney is optimistic they can turn things around.

“I feel that the team are in a good position right now, and we can see that there have been improvements from each game, and there is a difference compared to how things were at the start of the season.

“We have been adjusting well to the coach’s tactics, but there is still much for us to fix,” he said.

Sabah’s last league match saw them lose 1-2 to Selangor, with Tierney scoring the sole goal for his side.

But for the national Under-23 squad player, he said it’s not about who scores, but the final score at the end.

“It doesn’t matter who scores. As long as the team win,” he said.

“This game will not have me being focused on scoring, as we just want the win.”
