PETALING JAYA: Harimau Malaya CEO Rob Friend believes the ongoing process with FIFA will deliver a fair and transparent outcome following the world body’s decision to sanction seven mixed-heritage players and the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).
In a statement on Monday (Sept 29), Friend said while the national team were shocked by the ruling, it remains united and focused on the road ahead as preparations continue for the upcoming World Cup and Asian Cup qualification matches against Laos.
"We respect the ongoing proceedings and trust the process will deliver a fair and transparent outcome,” said Friend.
"We are shocked by FIFA’s decision and the unprecedented sanctions imposed on our players. FAM have addressed the administrative matters under review, and the national team stands firmly behind the appeal process."
Friend reaffirmed that the Harimau Malaya camp remains committed to professionalism and discipline as they look to maintain their performance standards despite the off-field controversy.
"As Harimau Malaya, our full focus is on preparing a strong team for the qualification matches against Laos," he said.
"We will continue to reflect the pride and spirit of the nation through our conduct, unity, and performance on the pitch."
He described the current situation as a defining moment for Malaysian football, calling on everyone connected to the team to stay strong and united.
"This is a defining moment for Malaysian football. Harimau Malaya remains united and resolute, standing with our players, coaches, and staff as we move forward with purpose and determination."
On Friday, FIFA fined FAM 350,000 Swiss francs (RM1.8mil) and handed 12-month bans to seven heritage players - Facundo Garces, Rodrigo Holgado, Ezequiel Irazabal, Hevel, Gabriel Palmero, Imanol Machuca, and Figueiredo - over irregularities in their registration documents.
