Inter Miami star Lionel Messi underwent an MRI this week that revealed an adductor injury which will keep him off Argentina's roster for upcoming World Cup qualifying matches.

Messi scored a goal and played all 90 minutes in a 2-1 victory against Atlanta United on Sunday. But he reported discomfort and a further examination revealed a "low-grade injury," the club said in a statement.

Messi will not be on the roster for Argentina's qualifiers against Uruguay on Friday and Brazil next Tuesday.

"It's a shame to miss these special games with the Argentinian national team against Brazil and Uruguay," Messi said in a statement posted to social media. "Like always, I wanted to be there but at the last minute an injury (will keep) me out. But I will be supporting and cheering from here like a fan. Let's go Argentina!"

Inter Miami had worked to limit Messi's schedule amid a busy start to the 2025 season. The club already has played eight games since Feb. 19, including four in CONCACAF Champions Cup play. Messi started in four of those eight games, missed two and came on as a substitute in two others.

The 37-year-old has four goals across all competitions so far this season.

According to reports, Inter Miami and Argentina had worked together to determine how much Messi would play in club matches.

Messi's availability has not yet been determined for Inter Miami's next game, a March 29 MLS match against the Philadelphia Union.
