Kuching brace for intense battle with Selangor in race for second spot

PETALING JAYA: The race for second place in the Super League is set for a defining moment as Selangor host Kuching City at the Petaling Jaya Stadium tomorrow.

Separated by just one point, both sides know victory could shape the final stretch of the season, with Selangor currently second on 32 points and Kuching breathing down their necks in third – and holding a game in hand.

Kuching drew first blood in their earlier meeting, edging Selangor 1-0 in Sarawak last September, but with fewer than 10 matches remaining, past results count for little in what is fast turning into a high-stakes battle for league supremacy behind the leaders.

Kuching coach Aidil Sharin Sahak expects another intense contest, especially with Selangor traditionally strong on home turf.

“It’s sure to be an interesting match because we know Selangor can play well when they are at home in front of their fans,” said Aidil.

Kuching’s new arrivals - Harimau Malaya player Gabriel Palmero and Cameroonian Jerome Etame - have been dangerous, with Palmero scoring his debut goal in their 3-1 win over Brunei in the Malaysia Cup quarter-finals last week.

Kuching made a historic run to reach their first Malaysia Cup semi-finals after they beat Brunei 6-2 on aggregate, and are set to meet Selangor next in the semi-finals in April.

Meanwhile, Selangor coach Kim Pan-gon knows that the match will be a preview for the Malaysia Cup clash, but the team needed to look at the present and not future just yet.

“We have to be prepared but be humble. Kuching aren’t going to make it easy for us so we have to approach this match with strength,” said the South Korean.

“We know we will face them in the Malaysia Cup semis, but in the league, Kuching are among the strongest teams.”

Selangor’s last win against Kuching in the league came in the 2024-2025 season when they won 4-0 at home in September 2024, but Kuching got their revenge by winning 2-1 in their second meeting that season.

While both sides fight for second place, they will need to keep a close eye on Kuala Lumpur, who are close behind in fourth place, one point behind Kuching as they face Brunei tomorrow at the Cheras Stadium.
