PETALING JAYA: A tongue-lashing from coach B. Sathianathan has worked wonders for Sarawak United as they have pulled off their first win in the Super League.
The Golden Hornbills shocked Petaling Jaya City 3-1 at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on Saturday and Sathianathan was happy with his players’ energetic show.
Sarawak’s goals were scored by midfielder Boris Kok (21st minute) and striker Francis Kone (46th and 85th minutes).
Sathianathan had been upset with the team after their 0-2 defeat to Terengganu last week, where he lambasted his players for playing “kampung” style football.
Yesterday, he credited his players for playing smartly, especially seniors Gonzalo Soto, L. Kalaiharasan and Boris.
“We faced a tough PJ City side, but my boys gave their all. Some of them have just returned after contracting Covid-19, but they did not show any effects of ill-preparation,” said Sathianathan.
“I hope they will continue with this form although most of them didn’t play in their positions. I don’t want them to be worried about formation or tactics.
“We were lucky we got an early goal. The seniors played an influential role. The pitch condition was good and enabled us to pass well.’’
Meanwhile, Boris was happy the team pulled through although he missed his penalty in the 19th minute.
“After missing an important penalty, I kept my head up and scored 30 seconds later for my second goal in the league,” he said.
“I just came back three days ago from Covid-19 and I’m glad that I was able to contribute. We deserved it.’’
Meanwhile, PJ City’s P. Maniam was fuming at his defence as he believed the team conceded soft goals.
He hoped they would be able to rectify that before their next game.
Sarawak are 11th with four points after six games, while PJ City are seventh with seven points after six matches.
