PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Football League (MFL) have approved the takeover of Premier League outfit Selangor United by the Sarawak Football (FAS).
The team will be known as Sarawak United for the 2020 Premier League season.
Selangor United were previously owned by the Selangor Malays Football Association (SM FA) with funding from the Selangor state government.
SM FA were forced to get rid of the club after the state government decided to stop the funding and they were snapped up by Sarawak after their Premier League team were relegated to the third division – M3 League at the end of the 2019 season.
“The MFL board of directors can confirm that Sarawak United have begun the ownership change process with the Sports Commissioner and the Companies Commission of Malaysia,” said an MFL statement.
The MFL also announced that the 2020 M-League season will kick-off with the Charity Shield match between Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) and Kedah at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Larkin on Feb 28.
The decision to start the M-League at the end of February is to ensure the teams have enough time to adhere to the Economic Control Programme (ECP).
The ECP is being introduced to ensure teams spending within their means. The teams will have to submit their budgets by this Sunday and MFL will examine the budget and announce their decision on Jan 15.
The team will then be allowed to register players once the first transfer window opens from Jan 16-March 15.
