Beasley set to stay and MNCF issue warning to several officials

PETALING JAYA: John Beasley could continue serving Malaysian cycling in a different capacity even if the Australian opts not to extend his contract as national technical director beyond January next year.

Malaysia National Cycling Federation (MNCF) president Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill said the federation remain keen to keep Beasley, who has spent the last 20 years with Malaysian cycling, and are giving him time to decide on his future.

Following a meeting with Beasley two days ago, Amarjit said the Australian had indicated that he was open to remaining with Malaysian cycling, although there were several issues that had left him unhappy.

"I think we had a very frank and open discussion. Nothing was hidden," said Amarjit.

"I told him, and he agreed, that he loves Malaysia too much to just walk away.

Earlier, Beasley stated that he would leave the Malaysian cycling scene because he could not tolerate the 'politics' within the circle.

"I asked Beasley a very direct question – what would happen if Datuk Azizul (Azizulhasni Awang) wanted to continue until the Los Angeles Olympics?

"I told Beasley that he would still have a role to play if that happened and he said, 'of course'.

"I think that gives us an indication of where things are heading.

"If John can focus on our high-performance athletes and continue giving them what they need, that would be ideal.

"High-performance athletes develop strong bonds with their coaches. It's easy to say we can just find another coach, but it's not that simple," said Amarjit.

Amarjit added that he had identified the individuals believed to be behind the recent controversy involving Beasley and MNCF.

Although he declined to name those involved, they are believed to have damaged the federation's image by stirring tensions surrounding Beasley.

MNCF have since issued a show-cause letter to one individual, while another person has been identified and could face further action.

"If you are a coach or hold any position, there are rules and regulations that you must follow. If you have concerns or complaints, there are proper channels to raise them.

"I want to make it clear that the MNCF will not tolerate such behaviour," added Amarjit.
