THE Sports Toto and Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Athletic Association (FTKLAA) Go For It! Cross Country Run will return for its 34th edition on April 14 at Padang Merbok, Kuala Lumpur.

This year’s cross country run will see additional categories added for a total of 10 and race distances extended to as long as 15km to meet the demands of runners.

“We have changed the distances from 10km to 15km and 6.6km to 10km for this year’s event,” FTKLAA president Datuk S. Vegiyathuman said during the sponsorship presentation ceremony at the Olympic Council of Malaysia.

“Runners like to participate in longer distances nowadays and use it as preparation for 21km and 42km distances. Last year, we had about 1,400 participants and this year we are targeting 2,000.”

This year’s route will take runners from Padang Merbok up to Bukit Tunku, past the National Monument and Taman Botani

Tasik Perdana, with approximately 40% of the course on non-road surfaces.

This year, he added, will see the addition of 3km and 7km youth categories for primary and secondary school students, which will aid in developing them in athletics.

The 10 categories are: 15km (Men Open; Women Open; Men Junior; Veteran), 10km (Men Veteran; Women Veteran), 7km (Men Junior; Women Junior); as well as the 3km and 7km youth category.

The run is open to Malaysians and foreigners and the top five finishers in all but the 5km fun run category will receive cash prizes which total RM11,550.

Malaysia Athletics Federation president Datuk Karim Ibrahim, lauded the FTKLAA for its contribution to athletics.

He said the annual cross country run must continue because it has been instrumental in the overall development of athletes in the Federal Territory, especially in schools and clubs.

Other than cash prizes for the top five finishers, all participants will be entitled to lucky draws which offer attractive prizes such as bicycles, electrical appliances as well as hotel and shopping vouchers.

Title sponsor Sports Toto returns this year with a RM100,000 sponsorship along with co-sponsors Berjaya Hotels and Resorts, Starbucks, Sports Toto Fitness Centre, Nestle Milo, 100 Plus, Purefit, KLCC Runners Group, BookDoc, N8 Sports Nutrition and Sherif Tea.

Sports Toto communications manager Giam Say Khoon said the company was pleased to collaborate with FTKLAA again.

“Cross country running is not common nowadays, it is rather old school if we compare it with other running events available in the city, so we hope that the new generation will try it out and experience what it is all about.

“The 15km for both men and women will offer something more challenging to running enthusiasts who want to test their endurance and capability,” he added.

Giam added that through Sports Toto’s Helping Hands programme, the company has also been a proud annual contributor to the National Sports Council in helping to develop local sporting talents.

At the community level, the company’s corporate social responsibility includes supporting various sports initiatives around Malaysia like the Penang Bridge International Marathon, Sungai Petani Half Marathon, Ipoh Starwalk, Seremban Half Marathon, Kota Kinabalu Sutera Harbor 7K Charity Run and the Sports Toto High School Basketball Tournament.
