Pei Tty set to use her experience to develop more quality women’s doubles players

PETALING JAYA: Former world No. 1 women’s doubles shuttler Wong Pei Tty is ready to bring home the experience she gained over the past six years as she prepares to return to the national set-up.

Pei Tty will rejoin the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) as a women’s doubles coach on Sept 1.

Pei Tty left BAM in 2020 and returned to her home state of Perak, where she was involved in player development, before moving to Singapore in 2024 as head coach of the junior performance programme at the Singapore Sports School.

Having worked closely with young players in both Perak and Singapore, Pei Tty hopes the experience will help her develop more quality women’s doubles players for Malaysia.

“I’m very happy and grateful for the opportunity to return to BAM. It feels quite special because I left in 2020, and after several years of gaining experience in different environments, I now have the opportunity to come back and contribute again. I’m really looking forward to this new chapter.

“After leaving BAM, I continued my coaching journey with the Perak state team. After that, I moved to Singapore as the head coach of the junior performance team. Both experiences gave me valuable exposure in coaching, player development, leadership and team management,” said Pei Tty.

Pei Tty will join head coach Rosman Razak and assistants Zakry Latif and Ching Kai Feng in the national women’s doubles coaching team.

The department currently faces the challenge of closing the gap between top pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah and the rest of the national squad.

Pei Tty believes having a proper pathway for junior players will be important to ensure they are ready to make the step up to the senior level.

“I hope to work closely with the women’s doubles coaches and the whole team to build the programme together. It’s important for us to have a continuous pathway from player development to the elite level, so we can develop players consistently for both the present and the future,” added Pei Tty.

Besides Pei Tty, Teo Kok Siang will also return to BAM on Sept 1 to join the national mixed doubles coaching team.

Kok Siang previously headed an independent set-up where he coached Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and husband-and-wife pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie.
