PETALING JAYA: Recently appointed women’s doubles coach Wong Pei Tty (pic) believes that developing more pairings in the mould of seasoned duo Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah requires time and better communication.
“Nothing will happen overnight. Even Pearly-Thinaah didn’t happen in one day,” said Pei Tty after her first training session at Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) yesterday.
Pei Tty will join head coach Rosman Razak and assistants Zakry Latif and Ching Kai Feng in the national women’s doubles coaching team.
Former world No. 1 Pei Tty was instrumental in the formation of the Pearly-Thinaah pairing during her first coaching stint that ended in 2020.
“It took at least four to five years in the programme before they (Pearly-Thinaah) started showing results,” she said.
“It’s only fair that we give the younger players the required time to develop and groom them to be competition ready as well.”
It was a quiet first day back at the academy for the 44-year-old as most of the senior players in the squad are competing in the ongoing China Masters in Shenzhen.
“First day but no players,” she joked.
However, she was clear that her approach to her new role would be centred on communication, a skill she acquired during her tenure as junior head coach at the Singapore Sports School.
“Communication is key for connecting with the younger generation. They do not respond to the same things I did during my playing days,” she said.
“My responsibility will be to ensure a seamless flow of communication between players and coaches.”
