PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Cheah Liek Hou returned in style after three months out of competition by delivering a double delight for Malaysia at the French Para Badminton International in Mulhouse.
The 38-year-old, who has recovered from a thumb injury, battled back to overcome Taiwan’s Fang Jen-yu 16-21, 21-9, 21-13 to clinch the men’s SU5 (upper body impairment) singles title on Sunday.
He then teamed up with Mohd Faris Ahmad Azri to beat Taiwan’s Fang Jen-yu-Pu Gui-yu 21-10, 13-21, 21-16 and capture the men’s doubles crown.
Liek Hou had also completed a double at the Spanish Para Badminton International in March.
The Paralympic champion, who trains under coach Nova Armada, was delighted with his successful return.
"I'am truly grateful to have won the gold medals in both the singles and doubles SU5 events at this tournament in France," said Liek Hou.
"After almost three months without competing, I was still able to regain my rhythm and match feeling.
"I was quite worried before leaving for France because my left thumb was still slightly painful and had not fully recovered.
"The next major competition will be the Asian Para Games (Japan), so it is now time for me to focus and prepare for this prestigious event.
"A big thank you to all my supporters. This is the result I have achieved for all of you," added Liek Hou.
