PETALING JAYA: Men’s doubles shuttler Man Wei Chong may be able to avoid surgery for now, with doctors advising him to focus on rehabilitation instead, according to national men’s doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi.
World No. 6 Wei Chong and partner Tee Kai Wun were forced to withdraw from next week’s Malaysian Masters due to Wei Chong’s lingering knee injury.
With the injury worsening, surgery may be necessary for Wei Chong to allow for a full recovery before returning to action.
However, Herry said recent discussions with doctors offered a more positive outlook as surgery could be avoided at the moment if Wei Chong responds well to treatment.
“After meeting and discussing with the doctors, their recommendation was for Wei Chong to continue with therapy for his knee and focus on managing the condition through maintenance,” said Herry.
Wei Chong-Kai Wun have also pulled out of the Singapore Open from May 26-31, and the Indonesian Open from June 2-7.
The 26-year-old Wei Chong, who got married last week, has been playing through the pain in his knee for the past three months after suffering the injury in February.
The injury comes as a heartbreak for the pair as they will not be able to defend their title at the Malaysian Masters, where they took down compatriots Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in the final last year.
Wei Chong even played through the pain during the Thomas Cup in Horsens, Denmark, last month.
