Zii Jia and Jin Wei fail to make World Championships cut

PETALING JAYA: Lee Zii Jia will miss the World Championships for the first time in six editions after failing to qualify for the tournament in New Delhi, India from Aug 17-23.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) released the phase one eligibility list for the championships on April 28, with Zii Jia missing out after slipping to No. 82 in the world rankings at the time.

Only two Malaysian men’s singles players made the cut, Leong Jun Hao and Justin Hoh, who were ranked No. 25 and No. 44 respectively.

Goh Jin Wei also failed to qualify after being ranked No. 53 in the world then.

Malaysia’s women’s singles representatives will be K. Letshanaa and Wong Ling Ching, with Ling Ching set to make her debut appearance at the championships.

In the men’s doubles, Malaysia will be represented by Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani.

Last year’s women’s doubles runners-up Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah also secured their spots along with debutants Carmen Ting-Ong Xin Yee.

Malaysia’s mixed doubles campaign will be spearheaded by defending champions Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei together with husband and wife pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie.
