PETALING JAYA: Many were satisfied with the women’s team ending a 16-year wait to reach the Uber Cup quarter-finals in Horsens, except for women’s singles shuttler Wong Ling Ching.
And that is why she decided to deactivate all her social media accounts during the tournament last week.
Although Malaysia advanced past the group stage for the first time in more than a decade, Ling Ching, who played as the team’s second singles, admitted that her performance fell below her usual standard.
“For me, this trip was not satisfying. I went through a lot, including injury, and one thing I learned is that recovery is very important,” said Ling Ching.
The Miri-born player admitted that her back injury disrupted her preparations for the tournament in Horsens. As a result, it affected her focus and although she tried to prepare for every possibility, Ling Ching acknowledged that she struggled to handle the pressure, prompting her to take a short break from social media.
“I could already feel that I was not at my best. And when I did play badly, I could not handle it well. I felt that I needed to rest my mind and be ready to give my best in the next match, so I was off the social media,” she added.
In the group ties, she won against Ozge Bayrak (Tur), Chloe Lai (Rsa) but lost to Tomoka Miyazaki (Jpn), and Chen Yufei (Chn) in the quarter-finals.
“I know results are very important because I am doing this for Malaysia, and when I don’t get good results, I don’t feel good,” said Ling Ching.
