Zii Jia off to winning start at US Open


PETALING JAYA: Independent men's singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia got his US Open campaign off to a winning start after defeating Vietnam's Nguyen Hai Dang in the first round on Wednesday (June 24).

Playing at the Titan Gymnasium at California State University in Fullerton, Zii Jia needed just 40 minutes to beat the world No. 32, 21-15, 21-17.

Awaiting Zii Jia in the second round will be either former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth of India or compatriot Saneeth Dayanand.

Also through to the second round was Cheam June Wei.

The 29-year-old defeated Taiwan's Ting Yen-chen 21-18, 21-18.

June Wei will next take on Israel's Misha Zilberman for a place in the quarter-finals.
