Wei Jie, Carine win national Under-18 singles titles under new 15x3 format

PETALING JAYA: Tiew Wei Jie kept his nerves in check to land the boys' singles title while Carine Tee Xin Qi emerged victorious in the girls' at the PETRONAS Under-18 National Championships at the Selangor BA Hall.

The 17-year-old Wei Jie from Selangor, representing the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), had to slog to beat national teammate Lim Zheng Jie 14-16, 15-8, 15-7 in the final yesterday. 

Top seed Wei Jie, who had consistently won several youth competitions in the country before joining the national setup, was pushed to the brink but he stood tall. 

In the women’s singles final, the 18-year-old pint-sized Carine defeated Ong Xin Ru in straight games 15-10, 15-9. 

Meanwhile, second seeded Ahmad Redzuan Zulwaqarriz Ahmad Redzuan-Isyraf Hafizin Ibrahim took the boys' doubles crown, after knocking out Ethan Oh Joon Hui-Wan Mohd Darwisy Wan Hadelee of Putrajaya-Melaka 15-13, 15-8.

Lee Joinne-Tan Xin Yu took exactly 29 minutes to capture the girls' doubles title with a 15-8, 15-7 win over Sarawak’s Genevie Lim Tsin Yeen-Wafa Shahmina Rahman.

The mixed doubles final, however, went the distance as second seeds Ahmad Redzuan Zulwaqarriz Ahmad Redzuan-Teh Si Yan upstaged top seeds Mohd Shazmir Irfan Shahrul-Nur Aina Maisarah Muhamad Hatta 15-13, 12-15, 16-14.
