PETALING JAYA: Shuttler M. Thinaah’s vast experience could be the key as she leads Malaysia’s women’s team in their bid to reach the Uber Cup quarter-finals in Horsens, Denmark, from April 24-May 3.

Former world No. 1 women’s doubles player Wong Pei Tty (pic) remains confident of the team’s chances of ending a 16-year wait for a place in the last eight, despite the absence of Thinaah’s partner, Pearly Tan.

Thinaah has been named captain of the Uber Cup squad this time, and is ready to guide the other pairs, Carmen Ting-Ong Xin Yee and Low Zi Yu-Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan, as well as debutant Chong Jie Yu, who was drafted in at the last minute.

The 28-year-old Thinaah, who won silver with Pearly at last year’s World Championships, also offers added versatility, having started out in the women’s singles before switching to doubles with Pearly in 2019.

And Pei Tty believes Thinaah can offer more.

“Thinaah is an experienced player and I’m confident she can lead and guide her teammates well,” said Pei Tty, who was part of the Malaysian squad that reached the Uber Cup quarter-finals in Kuala Lumpur in 2010.

“It’s always sad to hear such news (Pearly’s injury), but this is something the team have to face together.

“I’m still confident Malaysia can get through the group stage. Team events are about spirit, trust and overall contribution.

“If everyone steps up, gives their best and fights for every point, I believe the team can make it.”

Pearly was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to a serious back injury.

Her absence has disrupted Malaysia’s plans as they look to secure a quarter-final spot after being drawn in Group B alongside six-time champions Japan, Turkiye, and South Africa.

For Pei Tty, the situation also presents an opportunity for the younger players to prove themselves as the team cope without Pearly.

“Don’t go in thinking it’s just about gaining experience. This is your moment to deliver for the team. Play to your full potential, fight for every point and believe that you can win,” she added.
