Dengue no barrier for gritty Shevon

PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles shuttler Shevon Lai Jemie showed that true grit counts even when the odds are stacked against her.

The 32-year-old revealed she battled dengue for eight days before flying to Europe to compete in the German Open and All-England recently.

Despite the setback, Shevon and husband Goh Soon Huat still managed respectable results, reaching the quarter-finals in Mulheim and the second round of the All-England in Birmingham.

Shevon-Soon Huat’s run in Germany ended in the quarter-finals when they fell 17-21, 13-21 to the Singapore-Indonesian combination of Terry Hee-Gloria Widjaja.

A week later in Birmingham, they lost 16-21, 18-21 to world No. 2 Chinese pair Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin in the last 16.

“Not the best, but not the worst,” said Shevon on her social media page.

“Started the tournaments a little shaky after recovering from an eight-day dengue fever right before the German Open.

“Only had two days of training before getting back on tour. But I’m grateful to be back on court and had some good matches with Soon Huat.”
