FIRST SINGLES

Leong Jun Hao (25) vs Shi Yuqi (1) or Li Shifeng (7)

This is the best chance for Leong Jun Hao to redeem himself after a toothless group-stage showing. All fans want is to see him come out firing and fighting for every point like former great Foo Kok Keong. It remains uncertain if Yuqi will feature after illness, but even if Shifeng is fielded, it will still be a tough task. Jun Hao just needs to show heart and intensity in his game.

FIRST DOUBLES

Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik (2) vs Liang Weikeng-Wang Chang (5)

This is a must-win point. Aaron and Wooi Yik are expected to reunite after being split in the last two ties. Weikeng-Wang Chang hold a strong head-to-head edge, winning nine of their 12 previous meetings, but they are not unbeatable. If Aaron-Wooi Yik raise their level and play to their strengths, this match could swing Malaysia’s way.

SECOND SINGLES

Justin Hoh (44) vs Li Shifeng (7) or Weng Hongyang (15)

On paper, this looks like a point for China unless Justin can lift his game significantly. Shifeng’s team-event experience makes him a tough opponent, while Hongyang has been less convincing. Justin will be hoping to face the latter. They have not met before, which adds an interesting element.

SECOND DOUBLES

Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun (7) vs He Jiting-Ren Xiangyu (99)

After being rested in two ties, Wei Chong could return alongside Tee Kai Wun in another must-win match as they are still the better pair for the job. The Malaysians have an unfavourable record, having lost three previous meetings, but their aggressive style makes them dangerous. In contrast, Sze Fei-Izzuddin are evenly matched with Jiting-Xiangyu at 2-2, but inconsistency under pressure remains a concern.

THIRD SINGLES

Lee Zii Jia (82) vs Weng Hongyang (15) or Lu Guangzu (23)

Malaysia will hope the tie goes the distance, though it may not reach this stage. If it does, expect Zii Jia to go all out. He has won all his group matches and will be eager to deliver. If Yuqi plays, Zii Jia is likely to face Hongyang, against whom he has a 3-3 record. If not, he could meet Guangzu, whom he has beaten five times in eight encounters. Zii Jia has a real chance here.
