PETALING JAYA: Former women’s singles world No. 1 Ratchanok Intanon has more to worry about than just missing out on the All-England title this time.
Ratchanok made a good start against Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min in the first round on Wednesday but the Thai began to complain of discomfort in her right knee during the match.
She tried to receive treatment from the medical team on court but it was not enough and she was eventually forced to retire from the match.
“I suffered this injury when I was in Indonesia and I tried my best for this match. I hoped I could do more.
“But I was afraid the injury would get worse,” said Ratchanok.
The 31-year-old explained that she had already undergone four weeks of recovery for the injury and is now worried she may need even more time with the Asian Championships from April 7-12 in Ningbo, China
“Before arriving at the All-England, I already told my coach that I might not be able to perform at my best, maybe around 60 per cent because I did not train much, especially footwork.
“Most of my training was done while sitting and using my hands, so this was the first time I ran on court since suffering the injury.
“I have to listen to my body. Even if I feel like I can do it, my body says otherwise, so I do not want to take that risk,” she added.
Despite winning many major titles in her career, Ratchanok has yet to enjoy the satisfaction of becoming the All-England champion.
“Of course this is not my last All-England. I still hope to win it and if I have the opportunity next year, I want to win it before I retire,” said Ratchanok.
