PETALING JAYA: Young men’s doubles pair Aaron Tai-Khang Khai Xing have something to be proud of in their All-England debut after achieving what some of their senior teammates have struggled to do.
The former world junior champions needed only 42 minutes to defeat world No. 4 pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty of India 23-21, 21-12 to set up a match against China’s Chen Boyang-Liu Yi.
In comparison, Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King have yet to beat Satwiksairaj-Chirag after four previous meetings.
Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun also lost when they first met the Indian pair at the Malaysian Open in 2022 and suffered three more defeats afterwards before finally finding a winning formula at the Indonesian Open last year.
Meanwhile, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik may hold the better overall record, but their last three meetings with Satwiksairaj-Chirag ended in disappointment, including the defeat that dashed their hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the World Tour Finals in Hangzhou last December.
For Aaron-Khai Xing, there was nothing extraordinary about their approach in the match. They simply followed the instructions and tactics laid out by coach Herry Iman Pierngadi.
“Coach Herry reminded us to control the first three shots properly and told us not to play lifting shots. That was what we focused on during the match, and we also communicated well on court,” said Khai Xing.
Their seniors Aaron-Wooi Yik, who also progressed to the second round, offered some valuable advice to the young pair.
“We did discuss several strategies when we were in Malaysia. They are playing well now and that level of performance was something we expected.
“It is a good result for them, but they need to take it one step at a time and remain humble,” said Aaron.
Aaron-Wooi Yik had little trouble advancing past the first round after beating the United States pair Chen Zhi Yi-Presley Smith 21-17, 21-17.
They will face compatriots Arif-Roy King in the second round after Arif-Roy King came through a tough battle against Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard-Mads Vestergaard 21-19, 18-21, 21-18 in a 69 minute contest.
Also progressing were independent men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who defeated Japan’s Kakeru Kumagai-Hiroki Nishi 21-10, 21-15.
Sze Fei-Izzuddin are scheduled to meet Indonesia’s Muhammad Rian Ardianto-Rahmat Hidayat for a place in the quarter-finals.
Wei Chong-Kai Wun also had little difficulty moving into the next round after beating Taiwan’s Lee Fang-chih-Lee Fang-jen 21-17, 21-16.
They will face another Taiwanese pair, Chiu Hsiang-chieh-Wang Chi-lin, who eliminated Malaysia’s Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong 21-18, 21-14.
