PETALING JAYA: Young shuttler Kong Wei Xiang received a timely boost ahead of the Asia Team Championships after capturing his maiden boys' singles title in the Under-21 National meet.

The 17-year-old was the youngest member of the team selected for the team meet from Feb 3-8 in Qingdao, China and could not have asked for a better way to prepare after beating Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) teammate Mohd Haziq Najib 15-13, 16-14 at the Perak Badminton Association hall in Ipoh yesterday.

Wei Xiang, who hails from Bukit Mertajam, Penang was delighted after adding to his Under-18 national crown last year and credited the win to the guidance of his coaches and sparring sessions with teammates in BAM.

"I'm feeling incredibly happy and a little overwhelmed. This win is truly special because it feels like all the hard work and effort has finally paid off," said Wei Xiang.

"Most of all, I want to say a huge thank you to the coaches and players at BAM. Their guidance and the all-out effort we put in together, in every single match and training session, made this possible.

"They helped turn every challenge into a milestone, pushing me to become a greater version of myself. This title is for all of us."

Wei Xiang is determined to build on his victory as he hopes to play his part in improving the struggling men's singles department.

"This title certainly adds to my confidence, but more importantly, it strengthens my resolve," said Wei Xiang.

"It reaffirms that I am on the right path. My goal is to use this experience as a foundation, contributing fully to the team's efforts.

"I also hope to apply every lesson learned to contribute further to Malaysia's men's singles achievements in the future. The real victory will be in our collective progress."

The youngster is next looking forward to making his debut in the Asia team meet which also acts as the qualifier for the Thomas Cup Finals from April 24-May 3 in Horsens, Denmark.

"I feel incredibly blessed and grateful for this honor. To be selected for the Asia team meet as the youngest on the team is a profound privilege and a dream come true," said Wei Xiang.

"I see this selection not just as an achievement, but as a valuable opportunity. My primary wish is to learn and absorb as much as I can from my teammates' experience."

Wei Xiang will join Justin Hoh, Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin and Eogene Ewe in the men's singles in the team meet.

Meanwhile, in the women's singles, Oo Shan Zi ended her wait for a national title after coming out on top 16-14, 15-4 over BAM teammate and defending champion Lim Zhi Shin.
