BUKIT JALIL: Datuk Tey Seu Bock has been confirmed as the new head of the national men’s singles squad.

The long standing question was finally put to rest after Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) performance committee chairman Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei admitted he could no longer avoid addressing the matter following repeated queries.

Seu Bock will report to national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen.

Chong Wei explained that no official announcement was made after Saturday’s BAM council meeting because discussions were still ongoing, particularly on budgetary matters related to appointing a new coach.

However, he acknowledged that it was difficult to keep the matter under wraps after Seu Bock was spotted carrying out his new role by accompanying men’s singles player Leong Jun Hao during the Malaysian Open this week.

“Regarding Seu Bock, everyone could see that during this tournament he was seated behind the court. I think this is something we cannot hide from the media. Yes, I can confirm that Seu Bock will be moving up to the senior team.

“This was discussed with Kenneth, and he wanted Seu Bock to return to the senior national team to assist him and work together with the other coaches,” said Chong Wei.

Chong Wei added that Seu Bock’s promotion back to the senior squad was also based on Jonassen’s recommendation.

Apart from his ability to work well with the existing coaching set up, Seu Bock brings vast experience in handling the men’s singles squad, having coached Chong Wei during his playing days, before being reassigned to lead the men’s singles junior squad in 2023.

“I listen to what Kenneth wants. He is the coaching director, and coaches know best what is needed and who they can work with to benefit the athletes.

"I am an official. My role is to cooperate and to listen to what the coaches need. I am always behind them and will support whatever they require.

“Based on experience, Coach Seu Bock is good overall. He also did a good job at the junior level. You can see clear improvement among the junior players. Even when he was with the juniors, he would discuss matters with me,” added Chong Wei.
