PETALING JAYA: Malaysia will still be represented by two mixed doubles pairs at the World Championships in New Delhi from Aug 17-23 despite the withdrawal of defending champions Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei.
Replacing them are world No. 43 Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien, who have earned a place in the main draw after initially being named on the reserve list.
They will join husband-and-wife pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie in Malaysia’s challenge.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed the changes in a statement yesterday.
“Mixed doubles defending champions Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei have withdrawn from the BWF World Championships 2026 due to Ee Wei’s ongoing recovery from a major knee injury,” said the BWF.
“Ee Wei had suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in her left knee during their quarter-final match at the Singapore Open in May.
“Following surgery, the world No. 7 is undergoing rehabilitation.
Also withdrawing from the championships are Indonesia’s Adnan Maulana-Indah Cahya Sari Jamil and Algeria’s Koceila Mammeri-Tanina Violette Mammeri.
They have been replaced by China’s Chen Xing-Zhang Chi and Indonesia’s Marwan Faza-Aisyah Salsabila Putri Pranata.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei made history in Paris last year by becoming Malaysia’s first mixed doubles world champions.
Meanwhile, the Badminton Association of Malaysia have submitted an application to BWF to protect Ee Wei’s world ranking while she undergoes rehabilitation.
She is currently ranked seventh with Tang Jie.

Women’s doubles: Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, Carmen Ting-Ong Xin Yee.
Mixed doubles: Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien.
