PETALING JAYA: World mixed doubles champions Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei know exactly what lies ahead of them, which is a straightforward challenge to return home from the SEA Games in Thailand with the gold medal.

The national pair have been tasked with nothing less as they lead Malaysia’s mixed doubles hopes at the biennial Games from Dec 7-14.

Their coach Nova Widianto has set the bar high, believing the duo are capable of delivering the title.

However, to meet that challenge, Tang Jie-Ee Wei must clear a familiar hurdle – home stars Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran, who have proven to be their toughest opponents this year.

The Thai pair have dominated their recent encounters, winning three straight meetings at the China Masters, Indonesian Open and Indonesian Masters.

Tang Jie-Ee Wei’s only success against them this year came at the Indian Open.

Their rivalry began at last year’s Japan Masters, which also ended in the Thais’ favour.

Still, Ee Wei is embracing the task.

“Of course, our aim is the gold medal,” she said after an event with Ajinomoto (Malaysia) Berhad.

“It’s not just about winning as we need to stay disciplined in every training session so that when we step onto the court, we are fully prepared.

“We will fight for every point and give our best for Malaysia. Win or lose, that will come later. We won’t overanalyse the Thai pair as our focus remains on our own preparation.”

Malaysia last won the SEA Games mixed doubles title in 2021 through Tang Jie and Peck Yen Wei.

Meanwhile, yesterday, Ee Wei also credited her mother, Jane Yeo, for being the driving force behind her success in the sport.

Jane has worked at Mamee for 33 years, and Ee Wei said her mother’s commitment has shaped her work ethic.

“Not many people know this, but my mum has been working at Mamee for 33 years,” said Ee Wei, who received the Mamee Gold Trophy yesterday.

“I grew up watching her work hard every day, and her dedication has always inspired me.

“Receiving this trophy feels special. Thank you to the Mamee family for supporting my mum, my family and me. Your support means a lot to us.”

Besides the SEA Games, Ee Wei and Tang Jie are also gearing up for the World Tour Finals in Hangzhou, China, from Dec 17–21.
