PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles shuttler Cheng Su Yin can’t wait to return to competition and regain her winning touch at the Kumamoto Masters starting next Tuesday, after being sidelined for almost two months with a foot injury.
Although she has not fully recovered, Su Yin is fit enough to return to action and no longer feels any fear about her old injury recurring.
“So far, I’m feeling fine and I would say I’ve almost fully recovered. The injury is still there, but it’s manageable. Most importantly, I don’t feel afraid any more,” said Su Yin.
Due to the injury, Su Yin and her partner, Hoo Pang Ron, were forced to skip last month’s European Tour, which included the Denmark Open, French Open and Hylo Open.
The 22-year-old had also previously suffered a tendon injury in her ankle last March while competing at the Orleans Masters.
Now that she has been given the green light to play in Kumamoto next week, the focus for Pang Ron-Su Yin is to rediscover the form that has eluded them this year.
After months of inconsistent performances, the pair were beginning to find their rhythm again at the World Championships and Hong Kong Open in August, where they reached the quarter-finals. However, Su Yin’s injury once again halted their momentum.
In Japan next week, the duo will open their campaign against Taiwan’s Wu Hsuan Yi-Yang Chu Yun, the recent finalists at the Kaohsiung Masters.
“They are a strong pair and if I’m not mistaken, they were the finalists at the Kaohsiung Masters. We know it won’t be easy, but we’ve prepared well and hope to give our best.
“We hope to regain that rhythm because our progress was disrupted when we had to skip the European tournaments. Now, we just want to find our momentum again,” said Pang Ron.
