PETALING JAYA: Being ranked among the world’s top five means expectations are now higher for men’s doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun.
While pleased with the rise of another Malaysian pair in the rankings, national doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky said Wei Chong-Kai Wun must now work even harder to maintain their position or climb higher by producing stronger results on the international stage and stay injury- free.
In other words, Rexy wants the duo to consistently reach at least the semi-finals in every tournament they compete in to earn valuable ranking points and strengthen their world standing.
According to the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings released on Tuesday, Wei Chong-Kai Wun moved up three spots to No. 5 in the world, while seniors Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik stayed firm at No. 2.
Even though independent pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani fell one rung to No. 4, it was still a proud moment for Malaysia, who now have three men’s doubles pairs among the world’s top five.
The top spot continues to be held by the formidable South Korean duo Kim Won-ho-Seo Seung-jae.
While striving to remain among the world’s elite, Rexy reminded Wei Chong-Kai Wun to be consistent, look after their physical condition and avoid serious injuries that could affect their performance.
“They must take good care of their health. For example, during the recent Arctic Open and Denmark Open, Kai Wun was suddenly diagnosed with a blood clot in his calf, which forced them to withdraw from both tournaments. That was a setback for them,” said Rexy.
So far this year, the pair have already captured two titles — the Indonesian Masters and the Malaysian Masters.
It is crucial for Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Aaron-Wooi Yik to maintain their rankings and form until May next year as Malaysia are building a strong team to challenge for the Thomas Cup in Horsens, Denmark.
