Danes in Jimmy-Pei Jing’s way as they eye first title after four misses

PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles pair Jimmy Wong-Lai Pei Jing are eyeing their first title together as they line up for the Indonesian Masters final in Pekanbaru, Riau, today.

Fifth seeds Jimmy Wong-Lai Pei Jing booked their place in the final after edging past Hong Kong’s Chan Yin Chak-Ng Tsz Yau in a hard-fought semi-final yesterday, winning 21-9, 14-21, 21-15.

Standing in their way are Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen-Alexandra Boje, the pair who denied them the crown at the Macau Open final last month.

Christiansen-Boje, who recently reunited, showed their pedigree as a pair who once ranked as high as world No. 8 by sweeping aside third seeds and home favourites Bobby Setiabudi-Melati Oktavianti 21-14, 21-8 in just 28 minutes.

Their impressive form makes today’s clash more than just a repeat of the Macau final, as Jimmy-Pei Jing are determined to finally break their duck after several near misses.

Since joining forces in March following the retirement of Pei Jing’s former partner Tan Kian Meng, the duo have shown encouraging progress.

They came close to victory on their debut at the Vietnam International Challenge but fell to Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man-Ng Tsz Yau in the final.

A similar outcome followed a week later at the Phuket International Series. In total, they have already reached four finals, including the St Denis Reunion Open in France in May, but victory has continued to elude them.
