PETALING JAYA: The future of mixed doubles player Jimmy Wong is at a crossroads, with uncertainty over whether he will continue his partnership with Lai Pei Jing or form a new pairing.
Recent speculation has linked the Selangor-born player with a possible return to the national set-up.
The rumours gained further traction after his contract with Taiwan-based sports brand Victor ended on Wednesday (April 1).
However, when met during a training session with the independent squad in Sri Petaling, Jimmy declined to elaborate, instead asking for a few days and promising to issue a statement soon.
“I will explain in the near future,” said Jimmy.
Jimmy and Pei Jing drew attention after deciding to withdraw from the Asian Championships in Ningbo, China, starting tomorrow.
Jimmy began partnering Pei Jing in March last year following the retirement of her former partner Tan Kian Meng.
Although they did not win any titles, the pair showed encouraging form by reaching seven finals, with runner-up finishes at the Macau Open and Korean Masters their best results.
They also rose to as high as world No. 23 within a year.
However, they have struggled in higher-tier tournaments this year, failing to reach the quarter-finals in all seven events they had contested so far.
During his previous stint with the national team, Jimmy competed in men’s doubles and also featured in men’s singles before being dropped in 2022.
